As I left work for the weekly animal shelter treck this afternoon my exit from the office was blocked. An 18-wheel coal rig had broken down on our street.
Instead of calling a wrecker service they decide that a Chevy 1500 was all the towing power they needed (towing capacity 5700 lbs - this was the lower-end silverado). I sat and watched them hook a chain to the hitch of the 1500, and a chain to the rear of the rig with the intent of pulling it off 11th street and make it do a 90 degree turn onto the cross street. The rig was on an slight uphill slope when it broke down. The 1500 started pulling and since it was being pulled off a slope it worked until (and how many of us saw this coming) - the rig slammed into the back of the pickup.
By this time it was off the slight slope on on level ground so they had no gravity working for them. I could have gotten out by this point but I wanted to watch and see what they did next. Three more times they put the chain back on, put the 1500 in 4-wheel drive, and three more times just sat and spun their wheels. The driver of the 1500 had the pedal to the metal - at one point he was spinning his truck sideways, only stopping when he heard a loud pop that shouldn't be heard coming from the undercarriage of a truck.
This went on for about 45 minutes before they decided to call a wrecker service to move the thing about 150 yards out of the road.
